Problematic video game use is one of the main educational and social concerns today, especially during adolescence, a stage in which digital technologies play a central role in leisure, socialisation and everyday life. This study analyses various indicators associated with problematic video game use among secondary education students, focusing on its possible academic, psychological and social implications. The objectives of the study were to identify behaviours that indicate problematic video game use; to analyse the relationship between frequency of use and these indicators; to examine the association between these behaviours and technological stress; and to explore the relationship between gaming frequency and social skills. The sample consisted of 1,101 adolescents. The results show that 24.4% of young people acknowledge abandoning, interrupting or neglecting school duties in order to spend more time playing video games. Likewise, a higher frequency of use is associated with greater irritability when gaming is interrupted, a greater need to increase gaming time and more interference in daily life. An association is also identified between indicators of problematic use and technological stress. Finally, students who make more intensive use of video game consoles show lower assertiveness, a greater preference for virtual interaction and a stronger tendency to reduce face-to-face social activities.
